BRC Mondra Coalition Publishes Caretaker Methodology v7.2 to Strengthen Food & Beverage Sustainability Standards
The latest published version of the LCA Methodology includes recent impact assessment methods & databases for post-farm gate activities, along with modifications based on feedback provided by 3Keel on methodology reproducibility.
LONDON, 24th September 2025 - The BRC Mondra Coalition last week released Version 7.2 of its Caretaker Methodology, the harmonized Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) framework guiding credible, comparable sustainability measurement across the food system.
Version 7.2 has been shaped by Coalition members, with feedback from 3Keel and critical review from Dr Joseph Poore (University of Oxford).
The new release delivers:
Clearer system boundaries and allocation rules, ensuring transparency and comparability across product categories
Revised impact assessment methods, including updated post-farm gate categories and enhanced FLAG (Forest, Land & Agriculture) reporting
Expanded datasets and updated databases for supply chain mapping, transport modeling, and packaging impacts
Integration of reproducibility review feedback to strengthen accuracy and reliability, which takes the BRC Mondra coalition methodology one step closer to being a fully open standard!
Aligned with ISO 14044, PAS 2050, and the GHG Protocol, the methodology supports robust Scope 3 accounting and helps retailers, suppliers, and brands accelerate progress on Net Zero, Compliance, and Resilience.
"The Caretaker Methodology is the foundation for credible product-level LCAs across the food industry," said Tom Holden, Chief Product Officer, Mondra. "By embedding stricter data requirements and improving impact reporting, v7.2 enables businesses to act decisively on their sustainability goals-delivering measurable outcomes for people, profit, and planet."
For Mondra customers and prospects, the update reinforces trust in the platform’s outputs. By embedding the latest methodological standards, Mondra ensures that product footprints and supply chain insights are not only scientifically robust but also directly aligned with regulatory expectations and industry benchmarks, helping organizations de-risk compliance, make more resilient sourcing decisions, and demonstrate credible progress toward Net Zero.
The methodology remains a living document, updated in line with scientific advances and regulatory change. Version 8.0 is planned for release in Q1 2026.
