Mondra Launches Industry First ‘Base Year Recalculation’ for Trusted Carbon Footprint Reductions

28 Jan 2026

A new model for measuring the impact of product and supply chain reformulation on carbon footprint reductions in food and beverage.

Mondra LONDON, UK, 28 January 2026: Mondra, the AI-powered platform delivering product-level intelligence for food supply chains, today launched Base Year Recalculation, a world-first capability for measuring and validating carbon footprint reductions driven by product and supply chain change.

Volatile supply chains and climate change are reshaping the global food system, while mounting regulatory and stakeholder pressure is driving more stringent Scope 3 reporting. Although many retailers and brands have set Scope 3 targets, very few publicly disclose the absolute reductions they have achieved. The reason is simple: proving progress is hard. Reported results are often obscured by changes in methodology, data updates, or sales volumes, rather than reflecting genuine improvements in products or supply chains.

As a result, sustainability teams struggle to demonstrate return on investment, and confidence erodes at the C-suite and stakeholder level when the data itself is not trusted.

These challenges are confronting the world’s leading companies at a pivotal moment. More organisations than ever are committing to Science Based Targets, with SBTi announcing 10,000 committed companies as a major milestone just last week. At the same time, the BRC Mondra Coalition is shifting from four years of methodology development and data readiness into a decisive year focused on action and decarbonisation.

Mondra’s Base Year Recalculation addresses this gap by enabling companies to track year-on-year Scope 3 reductions in line with science-based targets - clearly separating real emissions reductions from changes driven by data, methodology, or volume.

Chart showing emissions with and without base year recalculation

As an industry first in carbon accounting, Mondra Base Year Recalculation gives companies a stable starting point for tracking performance over time. It automatically tracks and adjusts inputs for every SKU-level event, ensuring reductions are robust, auditable, and compliant with SBTi and GHG protocol. If the base-line changes due to factors that are not to do with re-formulation, Mondra amends to reveal trustworthy carbon reductions. It reduces the risk for leaders through a structured and automated process that keeps results consistent, providing an automated method to recalculate a company’s chosen baseline when changes affect comparability over time.

Designed for Scope 3 reporting, Mondra’s Base Year Recalculation provides clarity across products, categories and full assortments, with the option to view product and supply chain history, track the source of performance shifts and export transparent data for auditors. The feature shows the influence of real operational improvements and gives executives a simple view of what changed and why. The platform provides evidence of reductions aligned with best practices.

Jason Barrett, CEO of Mondra, said, “Progress stalls when leaders don’t trust the numbers. Base Year Recalculation gives teams a consistent reference point, so reformulation, sourcing, and supplier decisions translate into credible reductions they can stand behind.”

Richard Keane, Director, 3keel said "We believe that Mondra's Base Year Recalculation approach is designed to be fully aligned with GHG protocol and SBTi guidance. This is a cutting-edge solution to support brand owners and suppliers with their scope 3 reporting."

Mondra was developed in coalition with the British Retail Consortium (BRC), whose members include leading grocery retailers such as Tesco, M&S, Co-op, Ocado Retail, ASDA, Lidl, Aldi, Pets at Home, and Sainsbury’s; major suppliers including Avara, Samworth Brothers, Greencore, Pilgrim’s, Dunbia, Cranswick, and Bakkavor; and global brands such as Starbucks and Nando’s. Together with NGOs and government partners, this coalition is working to establish a unified standard for measuring product-level performance — creating a level playing field that enables consistent and credible measurement across the food industry.

Olivia Gasson, Product Manager at Mondra, said “The goal was to close a gap that slows progress for the sector. Sustainability leaders need confidence in the numbers before they report reductions. Base Year Recalculation from Mondra gives brands the confidence to progress at pace in a method that is consistent, transparent and aligned with best practice.”
